People say that the real culture of Beijing is “the culture of hutong” and “the culture of courtyard”. How true that is. Often, it is Beijing’s winding hutongs that attract tourists from home and abroad rather than the high-rise buildings and large mansions.

Hutong is a typical lane or small street in Beijing that originated during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). “Hutong” is a Mongolian word, meaning “water well”. During that time, water well is the settlement around which people lived. There are tens of thousands of hutongs surrounding the Forbidden City. In the past, Beijing was composed of countless courtyards. Hutongs were formed when people left a passageway between two courtyards to make entering them more convenient.

As the symbol of Beijing City, a hutong has its own layout and structure, which makes it a wonder in the world. When taking a bird’s eye view of Beijing, you will find the combination of hutongs and courtyards just like an orderly chessboard with delicate gardens, fine rockeries, and ancient ruins. Hutongs have witnessed the development of Beijing. Where there is a hutong, there is a story
Among the numerous hutongs in Beijing, Beixinqiao Hutong has the most turns. There are more than 20 in which you can easily get lost. The narrowest is Qian Shi Hutong (Money Market Hutong), measuring about 30 to 40 meters (32 to 44 yards), located in Zhubao Shi Street outside the Front Gate. The narrowest part is merely 40 centimeters (16 inches) wide, so when two people meet, they must turn sideways to pass each other. The longest one is Dong Jiaomin Hutong, with a total length of 6.5 kilometers (4 miles), lying between Chang’an Avenue and East Street and West Street of the Front Gate. The shortest one is Guantong Hutong measuring about 30 meters (33 yards).

Come and see it by hiring the rickshaw, and you’ll have a true taste of Beijing!
Long before city planners in Europe turned cow paths into roads, China had developed a very orderly approach to organizing communities, known as a “hutong”. Hutongs surrounded the centrally located Forbidden City and were built according to the precise etiquette of the Zhou Dynasty.

Relatives of the royal family and other imperial folks lived in hutongs that were near the palace and lay to the west and east. Farther away and situated to the north and south were smaller hutongs where the general population lived. A hutong usually housed a single family, all though many generations of the family would exist under one roof.

The word “hutong” can be translated as a lane or street that runs between two courtyards. The city of Beijing in China is famous for its thousands of hutongs — mostly build in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties (1271 – 1911 AD). If you visit Beijing and are interested in hutongs, you might seek out Sanmiao Street, which is the oldest hutong in Beijing — and has existed for more than nine centuries. The longest hutong is called Dongxi Jiaomin Lane, with one street being more than four miles long. This is quite interesting when comparing that long walk to the shortest hutong, which used to be called Yi Chi Street (now Meizhuxie Street), just a scant 32 feet in length.
Don’t visit Qianshi Hutong near Qianmen unless you’ve been successful on your most recent diet. This hutong is so narrow that two people can’t pass through it at the same time, even face-to-face! It is said that if two people find themselves arriving at either end of this street at the same time, one of them must back out and allow the other to pass through first.

The typical hutong is a courtyard or ‘quadrangle’. In actuality, it is a square with rooms built along the four sides with the buildings and the extent of the hutong compound varying in size depending on the wealth and status of the occupants. Think of four buildings all facing inward to a common yard, and that will give you good idea of what a hutong looks like.

All the buildings have the same basic structure of rooms, corridors and walls, and the all-important Chuihua Gate. The Chuihua Gate divides the courtyard into an inner and an outer partition. Wealthier people would have extensive outer yards and their buildings would include intricately carved and painted pillars and roof beams. Simpler folk lived with simpler fare but built along the same principles.

The positioning of the gate and the rooms always followed the principles of Feng Shui., for example, the door of each room would face the inner yard. Additionally, each room would be connected by a path from the yard, and every room facing the yard would have stairs in front of it.

The Hutong system of community chian tours had many traditions. In addition to the size of the hutong varying according to the wealth and status of the occupants, family members typically lived in certain parts of the dwelling. For instance, older family members would live in the northern most room and younger family members would live in the wing rooms. The southern most room or rooms would be used as a living room.

After the Qing dynasty, around the time from 1911 – 1948, China was subject to many external influences — including foreign invasion, as well as internal turbulence. Conditions in the hutongs became quite bad as the society and government underwent changes in response to these influences. New hutongs no longer followed the carefully established protocols and older hutongs fell into disrepair China Travel Service.
Conditions improved with the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Old ways have for the most part given way to new. This included the hutong system of community, all though if you visit as a tourist you will have plenty of opportunity to see a hutong. Hutongs in urban Beijing still house about half of the population and occupy about a third of the land area

Vacation time and the kids have decided they want to go skiing this year. I understand what you are thinking, expensive. Well it doesn’t have to be. There are a variety of things you can do to save money with overseas adventure travel. Many resorts cater to families and offer attractive deals in an attempt to get your business. With all the information available deciding on a resort is easier than ever.

The first place to look when planning a ski holiday is the internet. Almost every ski area will have a website. First of all, decide what area you would like to go. Do you prefer the cruising runs of the east or the high peaks and open bowls you realize west? Once you have decided this you can start to look for facilities the resorts in you preferred area offer. If you have any beginners going on the vacation with you then a ski school is one feature you should give high priority to. Your whole family will enjoy themselves more this way.

The type of runs the ski resort you choose is also important. If the members of your family are mixed in skiing ability then the resort should have a variety of terrain as well. This way the beginners can ski the green runs while the more advances skiers can enjoy more challenging terrain. Any snow boarders in the group will probably enjoy a terrain park. Many resorts also offer other winter activities like sleigh rides and ice skating. All of these can be a fine accent to your holiday.

According to cruise travel agent, good lodging is equally important as good skiing since you will be spending 1/3 of your vacation in the hotel or condo. Having a kitchen unit is going to allow you to save a bundle on meals. I know you would rather not spend time on your vacation cooking and doing dishes. However the cost to eat at many ski resorts is going to cost over $100 a day for a family of four. Also try and get accommodations with a separate bedroom, at least for you and your spouse or partner. Nothing wrong with some privacy while on holidays.

Once you narrow your search to 2 or 3 resorts then you can start to look for reviews from other skiers. There are many sites and forums where users can submit their experiences while at these resorts. This is a great resource that provides an unbiased view of that resort. It can also help you decide completely where you want to go.

Taking the time with your family to discover their wishes for your next vacation can allow you to plan ahead so that everyone truly enjoys their holiday.

If you and your family are already bicycling enthusiasts, then I won’t need to tell you how enjoyable biking is. But you might need some convincing on whether or not a car roof rack is a worth-while investment. So I’ll get to you in a moment.

But what about the rest of you? Why go biking?

Quite simply, biking is a lot of fun. It’s good exercise, it’s clean transportation, and it’s quiet. If you have young children they can ride behind you in kiddie seats, older children can have their own bikes, and even grandparents will be able to keep active with three-wheeled cycles as well. With all the outcry about the weight problems of the average American, it makes sense to get your kids involved in exercise early – and the fun exercise of biking might be just the ticket.

There’s a lot to be said for biking to and from your local store when you need a few groceries, or for your kids to bike to school or to a friend’s house. But most cities have bike trails scattered throughout, or parks or places in the suburbs where you can get out and spend the entire day biking in the quiet retreat of the outdoors.

And that’s where the bike rack comes in.

Sure, your bike might fit into you’re the trunk of your car, or into the back of your SUV. But do you want to go to the effort of taking off the rear tires and working to make them fit in your spacious trunk? Do you want your SUV’s upholstery stained with dirt or grease? Do you want to take the chance of scratching your car, or your bike, while hauling it in and out of the trunk?

How much easier it is to acquire a car roof rack. It’s easy to install on top of your car, and then it’s just a question of lifting the bike into place so that the self-clamping clamps can do their thing. And when you’re not using the rack to carry your bikes, most of them are adjustable so you can carry skies,

Do you have bad memories of roof-racks of the past? Well, technology has marched onward, and so has the quality of today’s roof racks. Bikes are kept stable and secure until you reach your destination. Roof racks are safer than rear-mounted racks, since you never realize if that motorist behind you might want to inch up a bit…and give your precious bikes a bump or two! The only issu for you to remember with a roof rack is that you actually have bikes attached to the top of your car, so you don’t try to drive into a low garage and total the bikes!

Subrata's bike under snow cover

There are as many different techniques for riding on ice and snow as there are varieties of snow. I have gain some experience in my last rohtang ride. There are certain common techniques that seem to be useful in many instances. One of main thing to remember is use your breaks care fully. New fallen snow presents problems for bikers due to the extra effort need to get through it. Six inches of really light powder is tireing and slow, but you can go for long distances. Its very little worse than riding against a good stiff wind. Even a foot of powder is manageable as long as you get there first, before someone else makes a mess of it. You will find it much easier to travel in totally undisturbed snow than to follow car tracks, or even another bike. If you are the first vehicle along the route your biggest problem is the extra effort needed to push through the snow. If you are following others you also have to contend with their ruts and the front wheel diversions these cause. On open road ways, watch for small bumps in the snow which appear without any apparent cause. These can signal debris in the road, or potholes under the snow. You will find that things happen slowly in heavy snow. Falls take a fair bit of time to happen, and you will find that most are avoidable by quick bike handling. Sharp turns that would only exacerbate a fall on ice are quite viable recovery techniques. By a “sharp turn” I mean turning the handlebar in large increments, and fairly large lean angles. You may feel you front wheel slip sideways. Don’t over react. The snow will supply resistance to this sideways slip, but it takes time to kick in (your tire has to compact a couple inches of snow as it slips before there is real resistance). Maintain forward motion, wait for the tire to catch. More often than not, the side slip will simply cease with you still in the saddle. If you dab, you dab. No big deal.

On the way to Rohtang

Time to complete the log

Right from the first day, we were searching for Bhuttas. I mean whats better than a bhutta, hot and salted, nimbu maarke, in such a weather. Got them in Marhi which is about 11km from the top. The last 11km took almost an hour because of the road condition, two landslides a few trucks ambling down the pass and the sheer number of qualis/innovas.
Ofcourse, some people were kind enough to park their vehicles right on the road, leaving barely enough space for a big 4X4 to pass through

On the top, finally, i was disappointed. Too many tourists, soiled snow and shops. We decided to move ahead a bit. And rewarded we were

Enjoy !!

The Alien and the Earthling

RohTang319

The Alien and the Earthling at Rohtang

As we played and posed around.. the weather changed dramatically. At first i thought it was a drizzle. But the white specks on my jacket made me jump with joy. This was the first time i was seeing live snow fall. Soon, the snowfall got more intense. It was about 3:30 in the afternoon. We decided to stop for lunch at the touristy place we had left behind. Surprise Surprise!! most of the vehicles were gone.
Tactical Mistake #2:: When in unknown area, do as the locals do.

We didn’t. Stopped at a small tent for some tea. This is when the things started going bad. Soon, the snow fall had become violent and the wind had started howling. It was getting very cold now and the only respite was the gas stove on which the tea was being made.
We asked the vendor, whether we should make a move. He said “Don’t worry. Kal bhi hua tha. Bas dus minute ki baat hai”. We ordered one more round of chaai.. but now i was genuinely worried. Tables were upturned, not a soul seemed to be in sight.

RohTang334

Snow storm at RohTang

It was now 5 and light had started fading. The wind wasn’t letting up at all. Now, the vendor himself said, “Saahab!! yahaan rehne kaa intezaam nhi hai. Aap bikes pe kaise jaaogey.”
Subrata and i exchanged worried glances.
5:30 and still no let up. Visibility was down.

RohTang331

snow storm

I said, “we have to get off the mountain”. Can’t risk wasting anymore time. The multiple orders of tea + maggi thing had cost us 280 Rs !!!

Ventured out of the tent and my visor went foggy. Shit!!! no chance i could use it. Opened the visor and was stung by the ice.
This is when subrata took this mobile pic.

Snow covered bike

A few kickstarts later, the zma roared to life. The 220 seemed dead. Have had a few starting problems previously. I pleaded with God “Not today!! just not today!!”
Tried dhakka start but even that wasn’t working. Finally, my moody bike relented and started up

We went ahead. 100m on, the windward side of the pass was covered with thick snow. The road was all white. Even at 10 kmph, i lost control. We skidded. Looked back for help from the Zma guys but saw that they had also fallen down. Subrata’s leg was stuck somehow in the Zma. Parking there, we helped him up. The Zma fairing had suffered a big crack. The clutch lever had broken in two. I looked around but there was hardly anybody there. For the first time.. fear engulfed me.
He said that he could drive it. So we started again. Both the pillions(my wife and bro-in-law) got off and we decided that they would walk down a kilometer or two while we would drive the bikes at a snails pace. Both feet on the ground.
We saw a Swift in the distance. A newly married couple was sitting in it. The Swift seemed perfectly capable of dealing with the snow. I asked them if they could take my wife down to Marhi while we follow them. The charming couple obliged and now the first of my problems were over. Went ahead a bit and Subrata fell down again. This time, he hurt his knee. I was shaking my head. This was just not part of the plan.
God has a way of testing you and then showing you the way, in our case, a truck
Talked to the driver who was ready to load up the bike. A few localites joined in and we were able to lift the zma up. Now, i had to take a call. Either i could continue alone in the snow or get my bike loaded up too. Bravery and bravado have a thin snow laden line and i decided not to risk freezing in the snow in the dark.. Plus i was concerned that the Swift might be able to negotiate ahead easily and if i got stuck my bike would be a big liability
Both the bikes loaded up, Subrata and Rishabh went in the truck while i joined my wife in the comfort of the Swift. Even with the heater on, i was shaking. The snow on my clothes was melting and simply soaking them.
Anyway!! we were safe now
Needless to say, the climb down the mountain was treacherous and took quite a while. We stopped at just one point where i finally mustered enough courage to take out my camera. The lens was all foggy. To hell with scratches i thought and cleaned it with my gloves.
Took a few shots. Here they are,

RohTang336-1

RohTang337

As we crossed Marhi again, i looked up. The dark clouds had engulfed the mountain above. I guess we had been very lucky

This was the most exciting part of the journey. Rest of it is just–
1. All wet and mudded in Manali(the couple dropped us there) among the scores of tourists in their bright shawls and monkey caps. Bongs, Bongs and more bongs. Well how can i complain!! i am a Bong too
2. We ate some boiled eggs so that we could finally get warmed up a bit.
3. We took a taxi from Manali to kullu as subrata said that he couldnt drive so better to take the bikes to kullu.

Day 3:
Sunday is a lazy time in the hills. Nobody gets up and even if they do, they won’t open their shops. Finding mechanics was tough. Some jugaad with rope to tie up the zma fairing, and we decided to move on.
The day was dusty and downright hot. But i had no complaints. We were alive.
As i sipped tea in a roadside dhaba near Ambala at 7 in the evening i reflected on a few things.
My tactical mistakes, pillions on these mountain rides and whether a car was a better option.

I drifted off to sleep and my wife woke me up. It was time to roll on. The wind gently energizing me, the rising moon for company, i was content. Saw a family get out of a car, all decked up and asking at the dhaba if they had a cooler, the kids shouting out for pepsis , their mouths full of fatty chips. I had the answer to the car Vs Bike dilemma
I revved up, engaged the gear, and screamed past them.
It was time to go home.

Anyway, had a hearty breakfast of paranthas, poori bhaaji and bhaturey among ourselves. A few strolls on the Mall road in Manali and we were ready for the climb. It was already 11 in the morning and it had started drizzling a bit.
As we started up, the weather alternated between sunny and a slight drizzle.
