Off the beaten TraQ

Sabah Malaysia, rich with eco-treasures from mountain high to ocean deep, is an adventurer’s dream. There are mountains to conquer, marine life to see, jungles to explore. But what if you only had a day to experience the best of Sabah? What experiences would you fill into that single day? Where would you go?

A visit to the Klias Wetlands, near Beaufort, about 100 kilometers south of Kota Kinabalu, is the perfect choice for a day out in Sabah. Just one and a half hour’s drive away from Sabah’s capital city, it’s near enough that you don’t have to spend priceless time wasted on the journey, yet exciting enough to fill your remaining hours with a memorable Sabah adventure.

The mangrove and peat swamp forests of Klias Wetlands and the deep river that runs through it provide visitors with numerous “wow!” moments as day turns to night. It is home to a diverse range of birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. This forest reserve is also important to the ecology and wildlife of Sabah’s coastal areas.

Your adventure at Klias Wetlands begins around 3 pm with a simple afternoon tea of local delights served to you on a deck overlooking the Klias river and mangroves.

For an even excellent view of the entire area, you are invited to climb up the 30-foot observatory tower at Monkey Tops Safari. From here, you will take in a bird’s eye view of the entire mangrove forest below and perhaps do a spot of birdwatching. There is also a boardwalk and sun deck that extends into the Klias River, offering guests an appreciative view of the natural surroundings.

Next, board a boat and take a leisurely cruise up and down the Klias river in search of the elusive proboscis monkey. With only about 3,000 of them left in population in Malaysian Borneo, they are now categorized as an endangered species. Endemic to Borneo, these gentle, tree-dwelling creatures are an attraction primarily due to their unique features. Bizzare as they seem, the pendulous nose and protruding belly of the proboscis monkey serve as a vital function to the mammal’s existence.

Next to orangutans, the proboscis monkeys are probably the most favorite attraction in Borneo. But unlike the orangutans which have been bred successfully in captivity, the proboscis monkeys have fared poorly in similar conservation efforts. This is partly due to the fact that proboscis monkeys have very specific dietary needs.

Thus, places like Klias Wetlands are important to their existence as they remain among the last few sanctuaries where these gentle primates freely live in and where they can be observed by the public in their natural habitat.

Also watch out for long-tailed macaques, silver-leaf monkeys, otters and crocodiles that are known to hide in the mangrove waters. Visitors will be delighted to spot some winged species here including the kingfisher, eagle, hornbill, gray heron, and white heron.

Before dinner, guests can take a break on land and indulge in a unique “pedicure” session. Head for the Fish Spa at Monkey Tops Safari, take off your shoes, and sink your feet into a pool of water filled with garra ruffa fish, also known as Doctor Fish. Relax as you let the tiny fish nibble away on the dead skin cells of your feet.

Next, enjoy the dazzling view of sunset with a river-side dinner. As night falls, the forest, too, comes alive with the sounds of insects and the various calls of the wild.

Finally, after sunset, board the boat again for an evening cruise where you will be surprised with the spectacular sight of thousands of fireflies lighting up the riverbanks. Like fairy lights on Christmas trees, these unique insects flicker in unison amid the mangrove trees, transforming the night scene into a magical wonderland. It’s one of nature’s greatest wonders that these insects are able to communicate with each other through synchronized flashings.

As you cruise down the river back to the jetty, close your eyes and let your senses take over. Listen to the buzz of the insects, and whatever other wildlife calls you can make out. Then tilt your head back and open your eyes to the millions of stars twinkling back at you from the pitch black sky. It’s an unforgettable scene, one that you can hardly get back in the city.

This Klias River Cruise is a day-trip tour package offered by Borneo Starcruise, which also owns the Monkey Tops Safari chalet resort. At the moment, tents are available for those wanting to stay overnight; some 40 chalets/rooms will be ready by the end of 2009 to offer more accommodation options to guests. Those staying overnight can choose to go on the morning river cruise to observe proboscis monkeys and other wild animals foraging for food in the morning.

Monkey Tops Safari is an eco-friendly chalet resort located along the banks of the Klias River. In efforts to care for Mother Earth, it has installed solar panels to harness the natural energy from the sun. Currently, more than 50 per cent of its electricity is generated from the solar panels. The chalet resort also uses recycled wood and local, natural materials as much as possible to build its facilities.

If you find big ship cruising just a little impersonal there are some operators that provide a smaller, more intimate service that may suite your needs.SeaDream Yacht Club Cruises are the perfect antidote to the faceless approach of the mass market cruise. The vessels operated by this company are not really cruise ships, rather they are superbly equipped mega-yachts and a true taste of marine luxury.

SeaDream operates only two vessels: SeaDream I and II which originally entered service in 1984 and 1985 respectively. They were bought by SeaDream Yacht Club in 2001 and were extensively refitted to make them contemporary, chic, all-inclusive boutique yachts. They both carry just 108 passengers, serviced by 89 crew, sailing the Mediterranean in the summer months and Caribbean in the winter.

This entire ethos of these vessels is to provide a luxury cruise experience for a younger, more informal and fun crowd around 40+ who seek relaxed and casual entertainment but still insist on high standards of service, food and accommodation. SeaDream I and II are therefore ideal for people who want an ultra-luxury cruising experience but in a casual style, so you’ll find no tuxedos or ball gowns on board these ships.Partially as a consequence of that luxurious informality, the average age of passengers is lower than you would normally expect on a cruise and tends to attract younger couples and honeymooners.

Guests tend to be a bit more active too. The vessels have swimming platforms that can be lowered as required and guests have use of the onboard jet skis and small dinghies.Because they are relatively small ships, they can also visit ports that other bigger ships could not even consider and although more akin to large yachts, they still have room for the facilities and amenities that you’d expect of any five-star establishment, afloat or on shore.A fully equipped spa is available on both ships as well as a well stocked library with full Internet access.Guests can even watch a movie in the Main Salon.

However, there is one way to stay in Mexico that is sure to please even the pickiest and most demanding vacationer; staying at one of the all-inclusive vacation meccas.

Mexico all-inclusive lodgings include the famous Club Med. Now a chain, there are many different Club Med lodgings in Mexico, and all of them show their guests a great time. The Club Med illage?in Ixtapa, Mexico, offers not only a great destination for adults, but even for whole families. They offer Baby Club Med and Petit Club Med, special groups that have activities for young children, for an additional fee. Included in your all-inclusive price at Club Med are many amenities; such as lodging, meals, all sorts of beverages, activities led by staff, and even tips. If you are looking to stay at Mexico all-inclusive lodgings other than a Club Med resort, there are many to select from. One such resort is El Cozumeleno, located on the island of Cozumel just off the shore of Cancun. This resort as according to travel guide book, located on a beautiful white sandy beach, offers deluxe accommodations as well as many different water sports, all included in your stay. Also bundled in with your all-inclusive price is dining at one of several restaurants and snack bars, and some all-inclusive packages even include a wedding! The hotel prides itself on being family-friendly with clubs for youngsters based on a Flintstones theme. This resort provides many different options for dining and refreshment in its different restaurants and bars, and there are also attractions such as a huge outdoor pool, Jacuzzis, water sports, workshops and other fitness activities. As the resort is all-inclusive, you needn’t worry about paying for any of the included amenities and other items.

Staying at one of the Mexico all-inclusive lodgings can be a great selection for your Mexican vacation, especially if you are traveling with a family with planet travel guide. Many of the lodgings allow children under a certain age to stay with you for free in your room, so you can take advantage of the all-inclusive rate for the whole family!

If you and your family are already bicycling enthusiasts, then I won’t need to tell you how enjoyable biking is. But you might need some convincing on whether or not a car roof rack is a worth-while investment. So I’ll get to you in a moment.

But what about the rest of you? Why go biking?

Quite simply, biking is a lot of fun. It’s good exercise, it’s clean transportation, and it’s quiet. If you have young children they can ride behind you in kiddie seats, older children can have their own bikes, and even grandparents will be able to keep active with three-wheeled cycles as well. With all the outcry about the weight problems of the average American, it makes sense to get your kids involved in exercise early – and the fun exercise of biking might be just the ticket.

There’s a lot to be said for biking to and from your local store when you need a few groceries, or for your kids to bike to school or to a friend’s house. But most cities have bike trails scattered throughout, or parks or places in the suburbs where you can get out and spend the entire day biking in the quiet retreat of the outdoors.

And that’s where the bike rack comes in.

Sure, your bike might fit into you’re the trunk of your car, or into the back of your SUV. But do you want to go to the effort of taking off the rear tires and working to make them fit in your spacious trunk? Do you want your SUV’s upholstery stained with dirt or grease? Do you want to take the chance of scratching your car, or your bike, while hauling it in and out of the trunk?

How much easier it is to acquire a car roof rack. It’s easy to install on top of your car, and then it’s just a question of lifting the bike into place so that the self-clamping clamps can do their thing. And when you’re not using the rack to carry your bikes, most of them are adjustable so you can carry skies,

Do you have bad memories of roof-racks of the past? Well, technology has marched onward, and so has the quality of today’s roof racks. Bikes are kept stable and secure until you reach your destination. Roof racks are safer than rear-mounted racks, since you never realize if that motorist behind you might want to inch up a bit…and give your precious bikes a bump or two! The only issu for you to remember with a roof rack is that you actually have bikes attached to the top of your car, so you don’t try to drive into a low garage and total the bikes!

I came away from Malaysia with the underlying feeling that this is a country that will never fail to impress. I encountered people who had been visiting this country for a decade and were still learning new tricks and gaining fresh insight. Malaysia rarely disappoints, frequently inspires and always surprises.

Take Kuantan. Firmly located on travellers’ itineraries, established travel guides will tell you it is nothing more than a ’stopover’ en route for the Islands further up the coast, or the magnificent forests of the interior. Do not believe! If you want to witness what hard-working, hard playing Malaysians themselves get up to, take a second glance at this part of the East coast.

This is truly an integrated multi-cultural urbane society. Maybe nothing captures this like the many Kopitiams (coffee-shops) scattered around town. Several generations of peoples cluster around marble-topped tables. Unforgettable coffee – made the traditional way – and served ominously dark and sweet, is the classic accompanienment to a sometime traditional cuisine. Eponymous ‘half-boiled eggs’ are delivered in their own cooking containers with strict instructions to, ‘leave for five minutes.’ Spicy foil-baked fish and….toast! The gentle hum of conversation negating any need for music, piped or otherwise, complement the notion of a region ‘at ease’ with itself.

If you end up here simply because you want time alone on your travels, you might be hard pushed to remain solitary for long. Malaysians effuse a special invective solidarity: everyone has a tale; sometimes a request.

But feel the breeze on an empty Cherating beach when fleeting October rains scatter the afternoon sun-seekers and moody, animated skies add an almost other-worldly feel to the vista. Indulge yourself in what is surely one of the whole regions most diverse bars, The Deadly Nightshade, where visitors, local and otherwise, trek up the imposing walkway as the sun sinks low to catch an evening drink. And try and stay away!

Bustling night markets showcase local products. Chillies and batik vie for the eyes attention. There are bargains to be had, but it might take a while. There is a certain art involved to getting what you want at the right price. I arrived just after dark in the middle of the fasting month: people had just broken their dawn-until-dusk abstinence from food and drink and there was a light-hearted atmosphere pervading the sprawling market. Generators purred as everything from roasted chickens to plastic sandals were offered for sale. Fluorescent lights adding a surreal glint to the endless of goods on display and the whole vista accented by flashes of lightning from a storm-laden sky.

Kuantan itself also offers some fine beaches. A short distance from the town centre at Teluk Chempedak: good stretches of sand fade into the local stone and a backcloth of lush jungle foliage. With the place just to myself on the afternoon I visited, the beach presented itself as a colossal playground for the rediscovery of lost youth.

Peculiar granite outcrops afford some fine, safe scrambling and although the overcast sky temporarily removed the turquoise glint of the sea, there was something totally liberating about being able to jog along the breaking surf, memories of work and the encroaching winter of home feeling literally and figuratively thousands of kilometers away.

There are a range of accommodations available from sumptuous five star hotels down on the seashore to clean, affordable residences in the town centre. Some cluster around the impressive river that forms the heart of the city and from where boat trips into the mangrove hinterland can be arranged. Others nestle up to what is generally regarded as the finest Mosque in this part of Malaysia, clad with an iridescent blue dome.

For me though, it is the relaxed way that everyone seems to conduct themselves in this part of Malaysia that really impresses. Two masseurs worked in harmony with each other and the scents from the oils were just heavenly. The town itself feels safe and clean and maybe because it is not part of the established tour circuit, gently rewards anyone who bothers to scratch the surface. Yielding a certain sort of allure and an effortless introduction to what Malaysia in all of its diversities has to offer. Only a three hour car journey from the heart of the capital Kuala Lumpur, there was something truly liberating about the short breaks on offer here. Heartily recommended.

It can be said that the Potala Palace is the symbol of Lhasa, the regional capital of Tibet. Situated on Red Hill in northwest of the city, the Potala Palace was originally built as the house for the marriage of Emperor Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wenchang in the Tang Dynasty. The palace was destroyed twice in its history. In 1645, it was rebuilt and expanded by Dalai Lama V. The project took about half a century to complete.

It is a sacred place for Tibetan Buddhism, the hall and corridors inside are decorated with master paintings, which are concerning Buddhist teachings and stories. The Red Palace displays the artistic statues of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wenchang, as well as 1000 Buddhist images. In 1994, the Potala Palace has been listed by UNESCO as the World Cultural Heritage. Nowadays, the palace attracts Buddhist worshippers at home and abroad to visit during religious festivals.

The main architecture of the Potala Palace is composed of the two parts: Places used by the Dalai Lama as his living chambers and for political activities; and holy stupas of the successive generations of Dalai Lamas and various Buddhist halls.

The first part is concentrated in the White Palace, built in 1645-1653. This part fans out from the original Hall of the Goddess of Mercy towards the east and west, encompassing groups of monastic halls with white walls hence the name the White Palace. The White Palace has seven stories. The fourth story, the Coqenxag or the Eastern Hall, covers an area of 717 square meters and is propped up by 38 large pillars. This is the most important Buddhist hall in the Potala Palace, and has witnessed many major religious and political activities, including the enthronement ceremony for the reincarnated soul boy of the Dalai Lama and the ceremony held when the Dalai Lama begins his reign at the age of 18. The fifth and sixth stories were used as the offices and living chambers of the Prince Regent. The seventh story was the Winter Palace of the Dalai Lama. It is called the Sunlight Hall simply because the hall enjoys boundless sunlight through its spacious windows. The hall is furnished with gold basins, jade bowls, Buddhist paintings and many other treasures, accentuating the high position of the occupant. Outside the Sunlight Hall is a spacious balcony offering a bird’s-eye view of the whole of Lhasa. In the distance are undulating mountain ranges, the beautiful Lhasa River, tracts of fields, tree-shaded villages and the glistening Jokhang Monastery.

The second part is concentrated in the Red Palace, occupies an area of 10,000 square meters, where the statues of Songtsan Gambor, Princess Wencheng and some thousands of Buddhist figures are placed for worshipping. When the Red Palace was built in 1690, the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi sent some 100 artisans of the Han, Manchu and Mongolian nationalities to take part in the construction. The majority of the Red Palace is taken up with various Buddhist halls and eight holy stupas containing the remains of the Dalai Lamas. The holy stupa for the 5th Dalai Lama is wrapped inside 110,000 taels of gold sheet (approximately equal to 143,000 ounces) and inlaid with 18,677 pearls and pieces of gems, coral, amber and agate. Sixipuncog, or the Western hall, is the largest hall in the Red Palace. The hall covers 725 square meters, and holds a plaque bearing an inscription by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. Inside the hall is the holy throne of the Dalai Lama and a pair of colored silk curtains granted by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. The Three-World Hall, which is the highest in the Red Palace, holds the Beijing-edition Dangyur which Emperor Yongzhen of the Qing Dynasty presented to the 7th Lalai Lama. The westernmost section of the Red Palace is the Hall of the Holy Stupa for the 13th Dalai Lama, built in 1933-1935.

The hall, 14 meters high, contains a Mandala said to be made of 200,000 pearls. The Potala Palace is a treasure house of Tibetan art, the opulence of which reflects the enormous differences that existed between the nobles and the serfs and slaves, who made up 95 percent of the Tibetan population, in the old days. While the Red Palace is composed of the religious center and the Holy Stupa Memorial Hall, the White Palace features the living chambers and political center of the Dalai Lama. Both palaces indicate the social character of temporal and religious activities in old Tibet. The 5th Dalai Lama moved into the White Palace from the Zhaibung Monastery as soon as the former was built. He stayed there until his death. From then on all the successors of the Dalai Lama resided in the Potala Palace, from where they exercised political and religious power. This is why lamas and Tibetan Buddhists worship the Potala Palace and regard it as the holy land.Shanghai World Expo

It belongs on the World Heritage List because, like the Great Wall or the Taj Mahal, it was meant to stir wonder and affection and gratitude in the viewer. It was also home of Buddha. And wherever you sit in Potala Palace, its 1,000 windows look over you in what can seem a kind of protection. When you look at the Potala Palace, you see not only one of the most stirring structures on the planet — “the most extraordinary building in the world,” according to the great British traveler Peter Fleming — but also a culture that is still strongly influential today.

Many Americans have family lineages from the old country and usually would like to see where their family has come from. Many people visit England, France, Italy, Germany and Scotland to get a sense of their roots.

Many people fall in love with the romantic images that they see in books or TV of beautiful gardens or the warm Mediterranean Sea and visit the south of France, Italy and Greece. Some people love beer and festivals and love to visit Germany, Austria and middle Europe.

Planning a European vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. Whether you travel alone, with some friends or your family you can usually get a great plane fare and deluxe accommodations for a relatively low price. Europe doesn’t have to be expensive at all. Many people spend far less than they anticipated. Obviously if you do lots of shopping and stay at top hotels you can pay through the roof, but most people can maintain a decent budget and spend as much money as they would as a normal big city in America. So if you are looking for a great place to spend your vacation, travel to Europe. You can buy cheap airfare as well, and that helps with the overall budget.

Fly Throughout Europe for Next to Nothing

If you are planning on visiting Europe, then you are probably on planning to see a large variety of countries over long distances. While trains are the norm for getting around Europe, many trains can be very expensive and take many hours to go from one destination to another. Some train trips are so long that you must sleep overnight in a bunk. If you are traveling to Europe this year and would like to visit many countries, look into cheap inter- Euro flights.

Most people think that air fare is very expensive. The truth of the matter is that there are now new airlines that fly throughout Europe that are extremely inexpensive and far more practical than traveling by train.

Two main inter-Euro carriers are EasyJet and Ryan Air. These airlines offer flights for as low as $10. It is true, you can save big on airfare. You can buy cheap airfare and that helps with the overall budget.

For instance, to take a train from Spain to Germany can be extremely expensive and take a full day of traveling. You can easily book a flight with one of these airlines that will cost you half the price of train fare and only take a total of two hours.

Low cost airlines in Europe have completely changed the way people travel from one country to another. Many people are now visiting countries that they would have never visited before such as the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Hungary. It can be tough to travel on a budget if you aren’t used to it. But there is no reason why you should stay home just because you don’t have scads of money! So, grab that battered, second hand Lonely Planet Guide and get going with these useful budget travel tips!

- If you need buy cheap airfare, follow that link to look online. You can save yourself quite a bit of money. Be flexible in your days and times that you want to buy cheap airfare, and you can find some bargain prices.

- Stay close to home. Instead of a family vacation to Disney World, why not scout out a fun location closer to where you live? There are plenty of other theme parks to consider that won’t require airfare and staying in some of the country’s more expensive hotels.

- Do your research. Start looking online for travel deals at least three months ahead of time if possible. That’s how you find special deals. Also, booking ahead saves you money since airlines and hotels charge premium rates for last minute travelers. You can often find deals for entrance tickets to places like Disney World and other popular attractions online.

- Be flexible and book extra time off are two very good travel tips. If you don’t necessarily have to go to Acapulco, why not check out airfare to other parts of Mexico? Also, being flexible with travel dates is ideal since certain days tend to be cheaper to fly on (like Tuesdays).

- Eat in travel tips: Find a hotel that includes breakfast and you save at least $6-15 per person on food a day! If you are traveling near home, try packing your own food. Or ask for a kitchenette and hit the local supermarket once you arrive. Preparing meals in your hotel room can drastically cut costs.

- To save money, follow these travel tips. If you are driving across the country, why not check out that free opal museum in Arizona or the World’s Largest Ball of String? These sights are free, but they are still interesting and can provide topics of conversation on the long drive to the real destination!

- Look online for coupons for anything. There are coupons for just about everything if you really look. Print some out for shows in Las Vegas or to get 2 for 1 entry to a museum. You can also find travel tips online.

- Don’t rent a car. If you are going somewhere like New York, just ask your hotel desk clerk about the subways or buses. And if you happen to be in California, check that the hotel you are thinking of booking offers a free shuttle to Disneyland or anywhere else. Most hotels offer free or cheap shuttle service to and from the airport as well.

- Some good food travel tips: when eating out, eat a big meal for lunch and go small for dinner. Lunch menus tend to be just as filling as dinner, but far cheaper in most restaurants. Look for a menu of the day, as well. These can be special offers that include an entire meal, soup, entrée, drink and dessert for a set price. For supper, split an entrée between two people or just order appetizers as your meal. Asking for just water is a good way to knock about $5-6 off each person’s tab!
